An Overview Of DIY Car Engine Servicing For Those Who Are Curious!
Taking care of a car engine is a daunting task for the average car owner. It often seems like something only mechanics can do. However, this isn't the case!
If you're curious about servicing your engine, we've put together a detailed guide that will walk you through the process step-by-step. Remember that this is just a general overview – always consult a professional before attempting any detailing.
Let's get started!
Replace the Oil and Filter
The first step in servicing your car's engine is to replace the oil and filter. This is a fairly simple process that can be done with common tools that most people have in their garages.
The old oil will need to be drained from the engine, and then the new oil added. The filter should also be replaced at this time.
Here are the steps to change oil and filter:
· Park the car on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
· Loosen the drain plug on the oil pan and allow the old oil to drain out.
· Replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.
· Open the hood of the car and locate the oil filter.
· Loosen the filter by turning it counterclockwise with a wrench.
· Remove the old filter and dispose of it properly.
· Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the new filter's gasket.
· Insert the new filter and turn it clockwise until it is tight.
· Pour fresh oil into the engine through the filler cap located on top of the engine.
· Start the car and look for leaks.
Replace Air Filter
· Open the hood, locate the air filter and remove the cover.
·Take out the old air filter and dispose of it following local laws.
· Insert the new air filter, making sure that the arrows on the filter are pointing in the correct direction.
· Replace the cover and tighten the screws.
· Close the hood.
· Start the car and ensure that it doesn't make any abnormal noises.
Replace Spark Plugs
· Locate the spark plugs.
· Pull and remove the spark plugs wires.
· Take out the old spark plugs and dispose of them in accordance with local laws.
· Insert new spark plugs, ensuring that they are properly gapped (consult your car's manual).
· Replace the spark plug wires, ensuring that they are properly seated.
· Reattach any electrical connectors.
DIY Car Servicing is Not for Everyone
These are just three of the many steps of car servicing. They might look easy, but might be tricky for first timers. Even if you are confident that you can do it, be cautious. Ensure that the engine is not hot and your protective gear is on. If you are not experienced, it is best to leave the servicing to the experts.
There are many things that can go wrong if you do not have the experience and knowledge. You could damage important engine components or, even worse, injure yourself. The cost of having a professional service your car is much less than the cost of repairing damage caused by an inexperienced DIY service attempt.
